Tsunami detection
Following the catastrophic events of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, GEMS expanded its remit to include provision of tsunami detection systems.
The group already offers a wide variety of environmental and metocean services around the world from a well staffed metocean division. This department now caters for tsunami detection and can deliver, install and maintain deep-water systems anywhere in the world using industry-leading technology.
The integrated offshore system comprises a surface relay buoy linked to a seabed pressure module. When a tsunami is detected, the system commences rapid sampling and transmits a warning to the host country's onshore monitoring stations -from where country-wide alerts are disseminated.
GEMS tsunami detection systems can be deployed in deep waters, up to 7,000m. Combined with the expertise of group's metocean personnel this technology can warn a nation of a possible or impending tsunami within minutes.
